Timber Screens

Timber is one of the most widely held materials for manufacturing screens because it is versatile, exceptionally adaptable to any location or situation, and very easy to manage in terms of repair.

Interestingly, some of the prime fans of timber screens are tradesmen and building professionals. The reason can be summed up in one word – “dependability”.

Timber, specifically the modern treated pine timber, is amazingly durable, and structurally very dependable. In Australia, some of the timeworn wooden fences are so old that they’ve essentially outlasted the houses. That’s not easy to do, and if you’ve seen some of the Federation houses with their ancient but apparently very sturdy wooden fences, you will appreciate exactly how steadfast these timber screens really are.

These timber screens are termite-proof, and will last for several years with almost no upkeep or minimal maintenance. The other big aficionados of timber screens might come as a surprise. They are designers, landscapers and architects. The reason is the exciting design flexibility of these screens and their very strong artistic values in design. There is nothing a designer, landscaper or architect adores more than a design medium which can be modified to any situation.
Designers like screens made of timber because they can be modified very easily to the site situation and offer multiple options for exceptionally high design values. Landscapers love them because they blend flawlessly with natural designs, garden features and other essential elements in landscape design. Architects often favor timber fences and because they can be custom-made to the lines of the building and present no construction hitches.

Moreover, for many of our clients here at HCDS, bushfires are a very real danger in the areas that they reside. Those with existing homes have taken a hands-on approach and elected to guard their existing homes and other customers building new homes are directed by innumerable authorities that they must take particular precautions as part of the Building Code for variable Bushfire Attack levels (BAL).

Some of the precautions consist of screens for both doors and windows and their frames and mesh must be made out of certain materials that have specific levels of resistance to bushfires.

As it happens, in cases of up to and including BAL 19 our average timber and mesh meets the Australian Standard requirements. For any BAL above 19, we can still help you by utilizing timbers and mesh that are more bushfire resistant.

Selecting a Product

So what type of privacy screen is right for your space? Below is a simple guide in choosing the right privacy screen.
Think about your space

Be clear about what you want to screen – is it just photographic or is it acoustic as well? Create a list of necessities your privacy screen must meet.

Entry spaces can truly benefit from the use of privacy screens. This is one area where they are becoming increasingly popular.

Decorative privacy screens can be utilized to divide large open plan spaces to generate ‘visual’ rooms. They can also be used to create an acoustic ceiling or wall lining in high noise areas.

Develop a design idea and think about it again!

There are numerous graphic styles and concepts you may choose from, so think about which style would optimally suit the interior look and feel of your own home. A screen is a sculptural bit which you can style in a really personal way; you may even desire to have a family picture laser-cut into the design.

Choose your design materials

Today’s material options and styles are numerous, and seeing contemporary architectural materials meeting with customary concepts is nothing short of remarkable.

Consider the maintenance, cost and quality of your screen

There are some privacy screen materials that require some amount of care. In choosing the material of your privacy screens, make sure you think about how it is maintained to ensure that you will be able to properly maintain it in the future.

Compare the costs and quality of all these materials. Choose a privacy screen that is within your budget without compromising the quality.
